  1. 1  UPDATE SCHEDULE

  3. USBBS is updated from entries subitted by callers throughout the
  4. month.  Only updates made to an official update point through the
  5. indicated method can be assured to make the list if the board
  6. qualifies.
  7.  
  8. The final update to USBBS is made on the last weekend of the
  9. month before the edition month unless the first is on a weekend. 
  10. The list is usually available Sunday morning.  I distribute it
  11. personally to the distribution points sometime during Sunday.

  14. 2  AREA CODE CHANGE
  15.  
  16. I have changed appropriate 714 prefixes to 909 on the list.  Thought
  17. you might like to see why.

  30. The 909 Area Code Started 11/14/92 in Southern California. The change
  31. affects Riverside, San Bernardino and Eastern Los Angeles counties.
  32. Population and technology growth has used up most 714 numbers.
  33.  
  34. The split - which brings to a record 13 the number of area codes
  35. serving California - is necessary due to population growth and to the
  36. proliferation of pagers, car phones, modems, fax machines, and
  37. automated teller machines.  <<and supposedly bulletin boards!>>
  38.  
  39. FOR THE NEXT NINE MONTHS, customers seeking to reach phone numbers
  40. covered by the new area code can dial either 909 or 714. But after
  41. August 14, 1993, the new area code must be dialed or a recorded
  42. message will be heard instructing the caller to redial using the
  43. proper area code.
  44.  
  45. Among the cities covered by the 909 code - in addition to Riverside,
  46. San Bernardino, and Pomona - are Diamond Bar, San Dimas, Ontario,
  47. Claremont, Big Bear Lake, Beaumont, Hemet, Colton, Walnut, Corona, and
  48. Temecula.
  49.  
  50. The 714 area code will continue to serve Orange County, the
  51. communities of Carbon Canyon and Sleepy Hollow in southwestern San
  52. Bernardino County and parts of La Mirada in Los Angeles County.
  53.  
  54. Palm Springs, Needles, and other communities in eastern Riverside and
  55. San Bernardino counties will remain in the 619 area code.

  64. USBBSxxx.TXT    Distribution and Update points for the USBBS

  67.                 Eventually, there will be 4-5 update points --
  68.                 one in each geographic part of the country.  The
  69.                 distribution points for the list are boards that
  70.                 I personally upload the list to shortly after it
  71.                 is updated.

  73.                 This file will be included with each edition of
  74.                 the list.

  81. 4  LIST CHANGES WITH EDITION 105
  82.  
  83. The following modem information will be displayed for new and
  84. updated board starting with edition 105 of USBBS.  The field will
  85. be in columns 50-53 in the following format:

  87.     mMxx

  89. m = Minimum speed
  90. M = Maximum speed
  91.  
  92. 0 = 300
  93. 1 = 1200
  94. 2 = 2400
  95. 9 = 9600 and greater
  96.  
  97. xx = Modulation type(s):
  98.  
  99. V = V.32 or V.32bis
  100. U = USRobotics HST
  101. D = USRobotics Dual Standard (V32 and HST)
  102. H = Hayes VSM
  103. B = Hayes Ultra (V32 and VSM)
  104. O = Other proprietary method
  105.  
  106. These modulation indicators will appear for those boards
  107. supporting 9600 baud or greater maximum rates.  As additional
  108. modulation types are added, we will consider them for their own
  109. letters.

  111. These features appear to be the most important for a caller to
  112. determine if they can connect with a board.  Higher baud rate
  113. claims (e.g. greater than 9600) depend so much on manufacturer,
  114. modulation, and settings of both the calling modem and BBS modem
  115. that 9600 will continue to be the maximum entry.
  116.  
  117. The entry will support two modulation types so boards which
  118. support different types on multiple lines can indicate this.

  120. These changes will be made in edition 105 of the list to allow
  121. door authors time to accommodate them.  Your comments are
  122. appreciated.  Please leave them to "SYSOP" on BOBsBBS

  126. 5  BOARDS REMOVED (USBBSxxx.DEL)
  127.  
  128. Each month I find out about boards which are down for one reason
  129. or another.  I simply delete these boards from the list.  Is
  130. there any value of moving them to another file (USBBSxxx.DEL) for
  131. a couple of months so they don't just disappear?
  132.  
  133. The file would be included with every edition.  I would keep them
  134. on this file with the date removed from the list for a couple of
  135. months.  Thus if they were removed in error, I can be notified
  136. and they can be replaced.
  137.  
  138. If I do not hear from you, I will continue to remove the boards
  139. without additional notification.  Please leave comments at
